Chronicles of a 1960s bus conductor chapter 4
In this year 2017 the number of people that can remember bus conductors is getting fewer, but the poor driver now days has to do both jobs. The conductor of the 60s had it fairly easy but as with most jobs there was a lot of thinking time needed. As in a previous chapter I described the role of the Setright ticket machine, although it was not rocket science there was a lot to think about or the poor conductor could be out of pocket. Apart from remembering the cost of the fare between stops there was also what was called fare stages these were numbered at various stops along the bus route and it was in between these numbers that the fare was calculated
Take a typical run from Nottingham to Ripley (B2) there were 28 stages, these I can still rember but not the fares
These are as follows
Nottingham Mount Street Bus Station
Canning Circus
Rothsea Avenue
Radford Bridge
Eaton Grove Wollaton
Russel Drive
Doctors Corner
Glaisedale Drive
Balloon Wood Cross Roads
Hag House (Trowell Moor)
Bishops Dyke (Very near were the M1 Bridge is now)
Festival in Trowell
Brook Street Ilkeston
Kensington School
Ilkeston Market
Rutland Hotel (Near MGO Depot)
Archer Street
Bridge Street Cotmanhay
Shipley Wood
Pit Lane (The bus stop was outside Trents Shipley Depot)
Breach Road Marpool
Heanor Market
Watkinson Street
Loscoe Denby Lane
Crosshill Church
Codnor Market
Eastliegh Road
Beighton Street Ripley (Terminus)
That was one route and there was many more no wonder us poor conductors had to go into the nearest pub to feed our brains!!!
